The seven major oil companies hold less than 10 percent of the total recoverable reserve base. Considering only proved reserves (1P), the study ranks Saudi Arabia at the top with 70 billion barrels, followed by Russia with 51 billion, Iran with 32 billion, the United States with 29 billion and Canada with 24 billion. Ranked by proved plus probable reserves (P2), Saudi Arabia holds 120 billion barrels, followed by Russia with 77 billion, Iran with 59 billion, Canada with 41 billion and the The Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), the world's largest supply of emergency crude oil, was established primarily to reduce the impact of disruptions in supplies of petroleum products and to carry out obligations of the United States under the international energy program. These are the countries whose proven oil reserves are in the top 10 globally. 10. United States - 39,230 million barrels. The oil reserves of the United States (US) soared to new heights in recent years due to increased usage of unconventional drilling methods that enable extraction of more shale oil and gas than was previously possible. As a result of these, especially fracking and horizontal drilling, US reserves surpassed 36,000 million barrels in 2012 for the first time since 1975.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) is an emergency fuel storage of petroleum maintained underground in Louisiana and Texas by the United States Department of Energy (DOE). It is the largest emergency supply in the world, with the capacity to hold up to 727 million barrels (115,600,000 m 3 ). [1] As of December 31, 2018, the United States had 17.3 billion barrels of crude oil proved reserves and 192.1 Tcf of natural gas proved reserves in nonproducing reservoirs. These volumes are an 8% increase for crude oil and a 15% increase for total natural gas in nonproducing reservoirs from the 2017 levels published in EIA’s previous report.[ 11 ] The U.S. holds more oil reserves than anyone else in the world, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Venezuela. That conclusion comes from a new independent estimate from Rystad Energy, a Norwegian

America’s oil shale reserves are enormous, totaling at least 1.5 trillion barrels of oil. That’s five times the reserves of Saudi Arabia! And yet, no one is producing commercial quantities of oil

That conclusion comes from a new independent estimate from Rystad Energy, a Norwegian Here's another way to look at it: the world consumes approximately 100 million barrels of oil and .36 trillion cubic feet of natural gas per day. This means that Wolfcamp and Bone Spring have sufficient reserves to meet global oil demand for over a year, and gas demand for several more. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is a government-owned stash of oil that's stored in four salt caverns in the Gulf Coast region. The reserve has a capacity of 727 million barrels (though there are plans to increase storage by expanding the existing caverns and building additional storage sites).
